What is Bitstream?

Inspire Net Bitstream service uses Chorus’ Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technology to deliver very fast internet access over normal telephone lines.

To give you a rough speed comparison, Bitstream can be anywhere from three to one hundred times as fast for downloads as dial-up, depending on the plan you choose. This only tells half the story though, because Bitstream is also much more responsive (less laggy) than dial-up, making it feel much faster even with the moderate speed plans.

What other advantages are there to Inspire Net Bitstream?

Apart from the performance boost, you will like the fact that our Inspire Net Bitstream service is always on - no need to wait for the modem to dial-up and connect, in other words.

It also lets you use the phone while connected to the internet.  That’s right, no more 'busy' signals.

Finally, Inspire Net's Bitstream service can be shared.  It’s easy to network the computer that will share the connection.  Just ask our Helpdesk for recommendations and advice.

What do I need to get connected?

You will need a compatible ADSL Modem/Router and, unless you have a specifically wired connection in your house, an ADSL filter for every phone device on your line.  We sell preconfigured routers as well as ADSL filters – call us on 0800 484 363 or 06 357 8559 so we can get the right gear for what you need.

What is interleaving?

Interleaving involves the use of powerful error-correction algorithms to improve broadband speed and stability on long or noisy phone lines.

While interleaving helps make your broadband faster and more stable, it can also increase the delay (latency) of your connection by up to around 40 milliseconds.  While most people wouldn't normally notice this, it can adversely affect some delay-sensitive applications such as certain online games.

While interleaving can be switched off, we do not recommend doing so as it can lead to a less stable connection.  There is a $30 charge (including GST) to switch interleaving on or off.

What is Naked DSL?

Normally the cost of maintaining the physical phone line to your premises is incorporated into your monthly landline phone connection.  If you do not choose to have a landline but still wish to use Bitstream, the cost of the line is incorporated into your Bitstream connection.
