About the Spam Filtering
Our Spam filtering is a free service that can cut down the amount of junkmail received by our customers. Emails that are considered Spam-like are tagged with ***SPAM*** in their subject line so you can easily identify them. They can then be automatically moved to a seperate folder so your inbox remains clean.
What levels of Spam Filtering are available?
There are four levels of spam filtering available:
- No Filtering
- Lightweight Filtering - filters only the really junky emails
- Medium Filtering - should filter most junk mails
- High Filtering - in testing this level let through only 1 junk email in 200 received, and lost only 2 valid emails - the 'downside'.
The default is Medium.
To change your level of spam filtering you need to login to our Accounts Server. Log-in with the username and password that you use to check your email. Click on Email Filter located on the left hand side. You can then change your level of spam filtering.
How do I automatically delete (or move) ***SPAM*** tagged emails that arrive at my computer?
We have detailed instructions on how to use Outlook Express to delete or move these emails. Click here to see these instructions.
What do I do if I receive an email incorrectly identified as Spam?
Just forward the email to along with a brief explanation of why this email is not Spam, and we will adjust our filters for future emails from that address.
How does the Spam Filtering work? (for the more technically minded)
Our spam filtering uses a combination of open source and commercial applications. Each email received by our mail server is analysed for spam like qualities. For example we will take a look at an email with the subject of "Mortgage rates at 40 year Low AA".
After being analysed for Spam like qualities, results are given. The results for the Mortgage example are shown here:
X-Spam-Status: Yes, hits=30.8 tagged_above=3.0 required=6.9 tests=BASE64_ENC_TEXT, BAYES_99, DATE_IN_FUTURE_24_48, FORGED_YAHOO_RCVD, HTML_60_70, HTML_FONT_COLOR_RED, HTML_LINK_CLICK_CAPS, HTML_MESSAGE, MIME_HTML_ONLY, MORTGAGE_PITCH, MORTGAGE_RATES, MSGID_OUTLOOK_TIME, NO_REAL_NAME, PORN_4, RCVD_FAKE_HELO_DOTCOM, REMOVE_PAGE, SUBJ_HAS_SPACES, SUBJ_HAS_UNIQ_ID, TRACKER_ID
The outcome of this is that the email has been rated with a spam score of 30.8. With Medium Spam Filtering (see above) emails that rate higher than 6.9 are tagged as spam. This threshold changes depending on the level of spam filtering choosen.
