InSPire Net Domain Name Registration and Hosting Service
What is a domain name?
In simple terms, a domain on the Internet is a unique name that points to either a host (which could be a computer) or a network.
It is easier for people to remember a domain name than the group of numbers that make up an IP address. Furthermore, an IP address can be mapped to several different domain names. This makes it possible to host several domains on a single IP address.
To understand how a domain name works, let’s look at ours: www.inspire.net.nz.
The name breaks down into the following components:
www. – this is short for World Wide Web and denotes a Web server. Likewise, you can have “ftp” (file transfer protocol) and other such abbreviations and names to help people navigate your domain.
.inspire – our company name.
.net - denotes that we are an Internet-related organisation
.nz – says we are a New Zealand domain.
You don’t need to use the first part, “www”, in a domain name, but it’s a good idea to do so, especially for Web servers. Most people have become accustomed to prefixing an URL with “www” when they wish to browse a certain Web site.
Why do I need a domain name?
For businesses, having domain names that match company names (or specific brands) is a huge advantage. It allows customers and clients to easily find your company and its products on the Internet.
In fact, nowadays, the Internet is rapidly becoming the most common way to find information about businesses and products.
For individuals, a domain name can be a great tool to keep in touch with family everywhere, for instance.
The process of securing exclusive use of a certain domain name is called registration. For a fee, InSPire Net will enter the domain name of your choice into registry. This means that for a certain period of time, minimum a year, nobody else can use it.
